I completed the second version of an infant heart monitor over Christmas. It tracks an infant's heartbeats between 1 and 300 beats per minute. At the "heart" of the project is an open source HW/SW engine from pulsesensor. IHM M-II's measurements of heart rates are, so far, consistent with those measured by stethoscope and stopwatch, when the power supply is sufficiently stable. Mark III was also completed over Christmas: using an autocorrelation function to extract heart rates. Unfortunately, its performance is awful compared to Mark II, and has severe memory space limitations imposed by the vanilla Arduino. I might retry M-III on a raspberry pi or an FPGA next.
My son having been, transformed into a reindeer by his mother, tries to catch up on a little sleep, which I tried to capture in a watercolour.
Our company's main investor, learning that I'm a fan of climbing, arranged my visit to China's Wutai Mountain. Ten thousand feet up the five-peaked mountain is a treasure. The Wooden buildings there, some of the oldest in China, date back from the Tang Dynasty (618-909). One of the highlights of the trip however was the monk who approached me wanting to play frisbee, which of course we did.
